What
is PET/CT?
PET/CT is a camera that produces powerful images of the human body’s
biological functions and reveals the mysteries of cancer.
Compounds like simple sugars (glucose, for example) are labeled with
signal-emitting tracers and are injected into the patient. A scanner records
the signals these tracers emit as they journey through the human body and
collect in the various organs targeted for examination.
A computer reassembles the signals into actual images - the first pictures
ever to show biological causes of normal organ function and failure of organ
systems in disease.
PET/CT can be used in…
- Cardiology
- Determine the viability and perfusion of myocardial tissue following a
heart attack, as well as Perfusion.
- Determine the viability and perfusion of myocardial tissue following a
heart attack, as well as Perfusion.
- Neurology
Diagnosis and treatment of the number of neurological conditions including:
- Epilepsy: Seizure Foci Localization
- Alzheimer- Type Dementia
- Multi-Infarct Dementia
- Depression
- Movement Disorders
- Stroke
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Oncology
- Determine the spread of cancer to lymph nodes or other organs.
- Locate the primary source of cancer in those instances where the cancer has already spread elsewhere.
- Evaluate the response of tumors to treatments or surgery.
- Grade tumors, especially non-solid tumors such as lymphomas, and;
- Determine whether masses detected by other means are benign or malignant.
What to Expect on Scan Day
- You will be called prior to the day of your PET/CT Scan to inform you of where and when to go for the Scan.
- Your average time at the Hospital or Out Patient Facility will be 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
- A small IV catheter is placed in your arm or hand to allow the radioisotope to be injected into your body. This radioisotope shows the affected area or areas that your Doctor is looking for.
- You will wait 45 minutes after your injection to allow the radioisotope to circulate through your body.
- You will then be assisted onto what appears to be a semi-tractor trailer. This is where the PET/CT scanner is located.
- A certified technician will help you onto the Scanner table and explain what the scan will be like.
- Your scan will last anywhere from 40 to 90 minutes depending on what your Doctor has ordered.
- Following your scan you may be asked to wait at the Hospital or Facility for up to 30 minutes before going home.
