MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced diagnostic imaging procedure which uses a magnetic field, radio frequency signals and sophisticated computers to produce multi-dimensional views of the body. These detailed images show the soft tissue, nerves, and bone structure of the body.

Vantage uses the latest GE Wide-Bore MRI, Signa 1.5 Echospeed, to provide doctors with more than twice the detail and resolution compared to current Open MRI scans. Radiologists agree that detail matters when it comes to making accurate MRI readings and decisions regarding your well being. The Vantage® route services facilities in Northwest Pennsylvania and New York, along with interim MRI units that serve hospitals nationally.

What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a large magnet, radio frequency signals and sophisticated computers to produce the images your physicians need.

An MRI scan is harmless and takes about one hour to complete. There are no known side effects, and MRI produces no potentially harmful ionizing radiation.

How Does MRI Work?

The human body is made predominantly of water. When placed in a magnet, the hydrogen protons in this water align themselves with the magnetic field. A radio frequency signal is transmitted through the body. The newly aligned protons and the radio frequency signal interact producing their own signal and return it to a computer which assembles detailed MR images.

What is MRI Used For?

High quality magnetic resonance images are diagnostically useful. They allow a physician to view the human body from any angle, in addition to producing images of internal bodily structures.

MRI provides physicians with valuable information that may not otherwise be available from other radiologic procedures. This high-tech information could eliminate the possibility of surgery. MRI is clinically useful in diagnosing:

  • Diseases involving the brain, spine and central nervous system.
  • Joint abnormalities and soft tissue tumors.
  • Evaluating, staging and treatment planning for tumors and diseases of the liver, kidneys, bladder and reproductive organs.
  • Vascular disease

Some MRI exams may require the use of a contrast agent to enhance certain tumors and disease processes. The contrast medium is usually administered by injection. There are no known side effects of the procedure.

Can Everyone Have An MRI?

Almost everyone can have an MRI, however there are a few individuals who should not. The MRI staff and physicians will ask several questions inquiring about past medical history, surgeries, work background and current symptoms to determine this.

Patients with metal objects inside their body such as cardiac pacemakers, cerebral aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, certain metal prosthetic devices, or metal fragments/slivers in the eye(s) need to inform the technologist prior to the exam. Some of these items should not be exposed to a magnetic field.

What should I expect?

The magnet is shaped like a donut with a comfortable table that slides into the center of the magnetic field. The technologist will explain the procedure, making the patient as comfortable as possible and requesting that the remain as motionless as possible.

During the one hour visit a rapid tapping sound is heard as the images are being acquired.

The magnet is equipped with an intercom allowing the patient to communicate with the technologist at any time.

When will the results be available?

The completed MRI will be reviewed by a Radiologist and the findings reported to your private physician. The physicians office should be contacted two to three days following the exam.
