Vascular Access Devices
Infusion medications are delivered using a vascular (or venous)
access device (VAD). In the hospital most medications are administered
using short-term catheters that must be frequently “rotated.” Advances
in technology have led to the introduction of a wide range of VAD
options such as PICC catheters.
These long-term VADs are inserted
in the hospital prior to discharge to home and provide for greater
levels of patient independence in therapy self-management.
Blood samples can also be obtained through the access device.
Ongoing lab results are required to monitor the progress of the
home infusion therapy.
